Outcomes
The Maui Hero Project has successfully demonstrated positive effects leading to the increased resiliency to alcohol and drug use over time. The items that show significant change, self-esteem, internalizing feelings of control over one’s life, and greater acceptance and positive feelings toward one’s culture are the factors that the Maui Hero Project believes will lead to reduced substance use and other risk taking behaviors.
In order to satisfy the reporting requirements of various Federal, state, and private agencies that have provided critical funding for the Maui Hero Project over the years, the program evaluation questionnaire included items to satisfy reporting requirements. Many of the required items and scales assess factors that are not expressly taught in the Maui Hero Project or are not addressed in a direct way. When examining the results of the program evaluation, bear in mind that many of the specific subscales that are reported and that do not have positive findings assess concepts and factors that should not be expected to change as the result of participation in the Maui Hero Project.
It should be noted that the report on these web pages is a summary evaluation report based on many different groups of children who have participated in the Maui Hero Project over the years. More recent evaluations reveal findings that do not show up in the cumulative report. For example, recent evaluations have found that participants perceived greater levels of social support from adults, displayed lower levels of aggression (specifically, fights), and displayed a drop in alcohol use.
